Once you’ve realized that you have a passion for the wine lifestyle, it can be a bit confusing as to just where to begin! There is so much information out there and so many opinions!

All of us at Big Fat Wine want to suggest a few essentials to start your journey into the wonderful world of wine. These are only suggestions but they are from our own personal use and experience(s).

CORKSCREW- Purchase a reliable corkscrew. There are some expensive ones out there that you  may want to try but this one we found to be easy and it always works.

AERATOR- We can’t promise this will make a 20 dollar bottle of red wine taste like a 200 dollar bottle, but we have experienced some amazing affects from aeration. Try it! Some young wines need a little boost and this gadget will certainly do the trick.

FOIL CUTTER- A foil cutter comes in handy. Okay, a knife will work just as well but once you slice your finger open in front of your guests, you will definitely want one of these. They are inexpensive so if you try to use it on a screw-top (okay, I broke mine), it can be easily replaced.

TASTING GUIDE- There are multitudes of books out there we can suggest. This one is simple and easy to carry with you. It’s even waterproof! Included is a step by step method for tasting.

WINE COOLER- You can pick up a larger capacity cooler later on once you begin to start your wine cellar but a small cooler is a must.

STEMWARE- The style and quality of the wine glass is highly important. Read our post on selecting the right glass for the right wine. You only need a few to get you started and it is    an essential investment.

WINE- ……………Enjoy!

The Search for the Perfect Colors!

This website thing is quite the undertaking.  While we have been active in the online world since the early 90′s, this one has been a challenge, also a labor of love.

That said… hours upon hours have been spent looking through themes, widgets, plugins and reviewing documentation for hosting, wordpress, software and applications.  You’d think that setting up the color scheme for your website would be simple, but not so.  My brain is spinning… HTML, CSS, PHP, ASAP… sheesh.  I need a glass of wine!

I’ll get something a little more to the point posted as soon as I can pry my brain out of cyber-nowheresville.

In the meantime,

As Always

Today Was Crazy!

We have been working on setting up a database for you, our readers, to add wines along with your opinion of them.  So the blog today is short and sweet.  Check back tomorrow to see what we have been working on.  Plus you will be getting a writeup about Summer Jam at the White River Amphitheater.

The wine today was cheap and abundant but we got lots of Big Fat Stuff done. The more we focus on the Big Fat in our lives, the busier we get! Don’t get us wrong, we were busy before we dove into this, but this is a sweet busy. It is a fulfilling busy that never seems overwhelming.  Each step of the way brings more adventure and leaves us impatiently looking around the corner to see what’s next. It’s our ride to somewhere and we aren’t about to get off.

Keep up with us friends, and you won’t regret the world as we present it, one glass at a time! Okay, maybe two or three.

As Always,

Love, Laugh, Learn… LIVE!

Cool Wine Apps

Wine, technology, wine, technology… it just rolls off the tongue.

If you know me, you know I’m a geek.  I wave the geek flag proudly and it  comes in handy in this day and age.   I want an i-phone but with the AT&T exclusive, and my loyalty to another carrier, alas, I’m stuck with my i-pod touch having to fill the gap.   My i-pod will do a lot of the things that the i-phone will do, at least when I’m in a WIFI area.

I’m addicted to apps.  No, let me re-phrase that; I’m addicted to free apps.  It’s like a treasure hunt and there’s nothing quite as sweet as finding a free app that will do what others are paying big bucks for.  The trick is to keep your eyes opened while you’re surfing your favorite websites and blogs.

Today I’m going to tell you about two of my favorite FREE wine apps.   *** non-geek disclaimer… If you aren’t a geek stop reading here and I’ll talk to you again tomorrow***

Are they gone?  Okay, so I have quite a few wine apps but the ones that are actually the most useful are Wine Notes, and Hello Vino.

Wine Notes is a cool app that does just what the name implies, it is a really easy to take and share your wine notes.   See web page for more details http://winenotesapp.com/ .

Hello Vino is a quick, simple pairings tool (a bit limited with selections if you like to live a bit on the edge).  And again is really easy to share information with your friends.    See web page for more details http://www.hellovino.com/ . By the way, there is a sample of Hello Vino in the side bar —>

The reason I included “share” in the descriptions is because they both allow for posting straight from the app to your twitter.  And Hello Vino also allows posting straight to facebook.

I can’t wait to see what the new generations of technology will bring to add interesting twists and turns to our lives in the coming years.  And APPLE, if you’re listening… We want i-phone on other carriers!

If you find any cool apps please, pretty please with sugar on top, email me at jona@bigfatwine.com and let me know.

As always,

Love, Laugh, Learn… LIVE!

RSS Anthony Bourdain Blog – Travel Channel

  • RAW May 4, 2012
by Anthony Bourdain Generally speaking, there are two distinct audiences for this show: people who like to look at images of food and are interested in where it comes from and how it got to the plate—and people who like to travel—or like the idea of travel—and enjoy watching images of faraway places and cultures. Oh—and there’s […]

  • BBQ APOCALYPSE April 15, 2012
by Anthony Bourdain I’ve referred only half jokingly over the years to the early days of my television career when, after two seasons of making shows around the world for A COOK’S TOUR, I was advised that audiences just didn’t respond to all those foreign locations where people talked funny and sometimes (horror of horrors) even […]

  • Hard 8 April 10, 2012
by Anthony Bourdain Eight seasons of NO RESERVATIONS.  Who would have guessed?  I sure as Hell wouldn’t have. How long could we get away with it? Not very long was the prevailing wisdom. And yet here we are.  Nearly 700,000 air miles later, about two thirds of the way through shooting—and it’s looking pretty good. Mozambique—airing tonight—looks SO […]
