We celebrate Independence Day today with friends and family, picnics, baseball games, BBQ and fireworks.  The original Independence Day was a day marked by the signatures of a handful of brave, committed, disobedient and treasonous men dedicated to bring about a new nation.  You heard me right… the signing of that document was a treasonous act.  And look at the last line– “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”  These brave men knew that to sign might mean sacrificing their lives, fortunes and honor… Damn!   We come from good stock.

How many of us, if faced with that situation today, would be willing or able to do the same?

While you enjoy your picinic or baseball game or fireworks display, raise a glass to those brave men (and women) who pulled together, stood against the status quo and dedicated themselves to bring into creation this nation, and to those who still today stand in the gap to ensure those unalienable rights are upheld.  We, here at Big Fat Wine, will lift a glass of red, white and blueberry wine in celebration and in thanks.   Cheers!

Who Remembers Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill?

It’s the cool-aid of wine, the ultimate chick drink and one  of those things that my palate has grown out of, thank goodness.  Although the $4.00 bottle of wine does have a certain appeal as the economy spirals out of control, I don’t plan to go there EVER again.  As god is my witness…

Okay, maybe I would take a sip just for old times sake.  I can remember sitting around with friends when I was a young adult, talking about all the wonders and ills of the world and how our generation was going to fix everything while drinking Boone’s Farm or Chella Bianco or some other such sweet concoction.  If only it was that easy.

Well, my palate has changed but many of my ideas and dreams remain the same.  I still want the world to be a warm fuzzy place.  I still want us to all just get along.  And I still think that our system would be better if it was run by a bunch of old hippies.

Maybe wine can bring the world together just like it brought together a group of seemingly very different young adults.  Maybe we need to send the White House a case of Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill, and see what happens.

By the way, if your favorite wine is Boone’s Farm no disrespect intended.  If you love it, drink it.  I’m a firm believer that you should drink what you like and I’m the last person to tell you what you “should” like.   Enjoy!
