We are all conditioned to believe that there are two types of wine drinkers; Red OR White. Being a dedicated Red wine lover for some time now, I need to confess that there are some Whites I enjoy as well. If you are or you know someone who is “dual-focused” (enjoys both red and white wine) and struggle with acceptance, read these five important steps that may help you accept this growing trend.
- Understand that many dual-focused wine people will not prefer one wine over another.”’ Many, even those who have a cellar stocked with whites or reds, may shift between wines depending on their feelings. When entering into a serious relationship with a dual-focused person, be prepared to accept their attraction to another type of wine- the same way red wine or white wine drinkers are attracted to their particular variety. Remember that if this person is enjoying a red or white with you in the first place, it is because they are attracted to that particular wine at that very moment.
- ”’Respect their dual-focus as part of his or her identity.”’Understand that they could also be mostly one or the other, which in fact makes them dual-focused. Most dual-focused dwine lovers consider themselves to always be dual-focused, no matter what they are drinking at the time. It is important not to suggest that they are a red wine drinker if they are enjoying a glass of full bodied Bordeaux, nor that they are a white wine drinker if seen enjoying a tasty Sauvignon Blanc. As such, do not question when they drink red or white wine; but accept them as they are if you wish to retain your relationship with them.
- ”’Enter into a serious relationship with a dual-focused wine drinker just as you would with any other wine drinker that enjoys your particular variety.”’ Understand that if they are attracted to a wine of different or the same variety as yours, that they are not ”cheating on you”; just as red or white
wine drinkers will be attracted to other wines of their preferred variety. - Maintain a healthy relationship. with your dual-focused wine drinker, as you would with any other wine lover that you enjoy being with. Be honest with them, be open with them, and share thoughts and feelings. Forgive one another and tell the unarguable truth when it comes to disagreements, learn to appreciate your fellow wine lover rather than show unhealthy criticism. Help each other when needed, and communicate openly about most any thing as you would, with a wine lover of your same variety .
- ”’Give them space”’. You may want to constantly ask them what wine they prefer at the moment, how they feel, etc. – ”don’t”.
